My Pony Hook Up (or Lack of)

I realized today that it has been ages since I went on a "pony hunt". If you aren't familiar with this activity, it basically consists of scouting out flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores for My Little Ponies. In the past, I have documented my more bizarre pony hunting moments. Oddly enough, pony collecting generates some interesting stories and experiences.

It is certain that my free time is more limited now, but even if time wasn't an issue I wonder if I'd still be eager to dig through bins of grubby toys, haggle over the price of a TE Quackers, or save a smoozed Peachy because she was priced at a quarter.

After I completed my US pony collection, I think I may have lost a bit of the "crazy" related to collecting. Don't get me wrong, I'm still thrilled to find a missing princess crown clip or swirl shell, but I know the odds of finding accessories while pony hunting are even more of a rarity than finding an actual pony. I suppose I don't think it is worth the effort of driving around and coming home empty handed when there are other things to do with my day. I'm all about the ease of eBAY or purchasing directly from other collectors. Plus, I love the fact that whatever I end up purchasing ends up in my mailbox.

I also think I've been a bit spoiled by the annual My Little Pony Fair and the endless pony items available for purchase from the vendors. After experiencing the Fair, it is hard to get excited about a dirty Sundance hiding in a box of McDonald's toys.

Maybe someday I'll come across another $2 Mimic, but for now, I'm happy to pay a bit more for convenience.

Rainy Day Cartoons

It is a rainy curl up on the couch kind of day around here and what better way to spend a lazy Sunday than eating a bowl of sugary cereal and watching some cartoons.

I am a fan of the new My Little Pony Friendship is Magic series but, sometimes it is nice to pull out the old school 80s episodes for the sake of nostalgia. If I'm not in a pony mood, I'll likely reach for The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin. Both make a lovely way to spend the day.

Do you have a favorite 80s series? Any recommendations for me to expand my rainy day viewing?

My Fugitive Flowers

Today was declared yard work day at our house since the weather was unseasonably warm and our poor yard and landscaping desperately needed some attention. As I was wrestling with my massively overgrown rosebushes in an attempt to cut them back for the winter, I couldn't help but laugh as I found myself thinking about the "Fugitive Flowers" episode of My Little Pony and Friends.

For those not familiar with this episode (and I pity you if you have not been exposed to it in all its 80s-product-hocking glory) it can briefly be summarized as the following:

Flower loving Pony (Posey) takes pity on talking pathetic scrawny flowers who are actually escaped convicts and plants them in her garden. The flowers deplete the garden of all nutrients, kill the other plants and become rude enormous bully flowers. When all seems lost, a troop of gargantuan law enforcement crabs (yes, I said crabs) round up the deviant flowers and take them away. Posey then learns an important lesson through song about not judging people ( or um...flowers or crabs) based solely on their appearance.

So as I was cursing my rosebushes for getting so ridiculously large this year I was also kinda wishing I had a giant crab on hand since my fiskar hedge trimmers were pretty dull. Plus, I found myself with this song in my head:

In short........Summer-1, Rosebushes-0

But it wasn't a rock... It was a rock, rock pony!

Or Pony rock? Or pet rock pony?

Needless to say, this auction for a My Little Pony inspired Pet Rock is one of the strangest Pony Themed items I've ever seen listed on Ebay. I guess when Pinkie Pie is your muse you've got to expect the unexpected.

The absurdity of it made me giggle and I hope it (she?) finds a loving home.

Click HERE to see the actual auction listing.

Does adding ponies to a room make it a "Pony Room?"

When Fathead released a set of My Little Pony FIM wall graphics earlier this year, my initial reaction was something along the lines of "That's fun for a child's room." Not so much because I am above adorning my walls with images of ponies, but more so because I have a very strict rule of no ponies outside the Pony Room and wall space is premium real estate in that place. Given the choice between erecting new display shelving or slapping pony stickers on an empty wall, shelves will win every time.

Fast forward a few months, and now I find myself plotting a full take over of the main floor office. It is currently painted in murals of flowers and weeping willows. The previous owner used the room as a child's bedroom. I've never been a fan, but for lack of inspiration it hasn't been touched since we moved in almost two years ago. Plus, it has really high ceilings and if I'm going to spend that much time balancing myself and a paint roller on a ladder taller than a step stool, I better be committed to the idea. I'm thinking since I spend most of my time in the office working on My Little Pony projects, why not just embrace it and share the space with Twilight Sparkle and the gang?

I've assured my husband that pony wall graphics do not equal "My Little Pony Room Part 2", but I don't think he is entirely convinced.

Yet More Shameful Pony Dealings

Wow, I can't believe it is already the middle of November. Time has definitely gotten away from me as I haven't posted on the MLPCollector Blog in months! I've been trying to keep things balanced between teaching, planning the 2012 My Little Pony Fair, and being a mom. I have managed to check in at http://www.mlparena.com/ and http://www.mlptp.net/ from time to time, but not as much as I'd like.

I have managed to keep up on the newest My Little Pony releases and I'm really digging Wave 4. I found Feathermay, Flitterheart, Honeybuzz, Plumsweet, Snowcatcher, and Twinkleshine the other day while shopping at Meijer. Someone had stocked them, but they weren't in the system yet and the cashier told me that they weren't allowed to sell them. I wasn't about to let these girls be carted off to some back room where they'd wait to be keyed into the system and then placed onto the shelves. My life is way too hectic to make a daily trip to Meijer to stalk the toy aisles... There was a time and place for that (college) but, it is no longer an option. I may or may not have given the cashier in question an evil glare prompting him to call the toy department and nervously mutter the pony names into the receiver. Apparently, I am not above intimidating awkward teenagers when it comes to My Little Ponies. Shameful.

I am going to make a concerted effort to blog over the next few weeks since I feel like I need to reconnect with my neglected pony peeps. I hope you all are doing well!

My Little Pony Buy One Get One Free at Toys R Us

Toys R Us is running a Buy One Get One Free promotion on My Little Ponies this week. Hopefully, my local store will have something new in stock!

Let's Play Dress Up!

In past years, when people came dressed up in wild pony-themed costumes during the My Little Pony Fair, they may have received a funny look. However, the fair staff embraced the trend this year and introduced our first ever My Little Pony costume contest. Participants dressed in pony inspired outfits and walked the (very short) runway while "Equestria Girls" played through the sound system. It was definitely fun as costumes ranged from a pint sized Satin and Lace, to an Applejack with a light up mane, and Pinkie Pie complete with balloons. I think this may need to become a regular event. It was very entertaining!

And before anyone asks, I didn't participate. I was just a spectator!

Check out the photos below!

My Little Obsession Documentary Film

On Friday July 8th, Julie Watts premiered her feature length documentary film, My Little Obsession, to an adoring audience of Pony Fans! The documentary was beautifully done and it is clear that Julie put a lot of love and care into this daunting project. The film was definitely a success as viewers laughed, clapped wildly, and posed for photos with the film's creator after both showings. Copies of the film were sold at the My Little Pony Fair on Saturday of $10 and you bet I snagged a signed copy!

For more information about this terrific film and to purchase your very own copy, visit http://www.mylittleobsessionmovie.com/.

That's a Wrap- Pony Fair 2011!

I'm back from a fun filled Fair weekend! I'm still recovering from all of the pony overload, but very pleased with how everything turned out. We had some amazing speakers including Hasbro marketing reps, Ryan Zintgraff of KLECT.com and Hillary DePiano discussed alternative selling platforms. The premiere of Jewel's Documentary film, My Little Obsession ,went off without a hitch, and the Hasbro tours were educational and entertaining. I especially loved touring their new Cake Mix Studios!

I'll be sure to post photos/video links soon, but for now, I'd like to give a special shout out to Karen who made the awesome Fair Banners and Badges, Emery for being the Fair Bingo leader, and to Ona who drew our amazing Fair Pony T Shirt artwork. You ladies ROCK!

I only had about 30 minutes to shop on Saturday since I was tied up with selling Fair merchandise and had to make sure we stayed on schedule. However, even 30 minutes was enough time to drop some money on a few new items for my collection! Check out this candid shot of me digging frantically through accessories. I was on a mission!

No Photos Allowed During Hasbro MLP Fair Tour

I know I've already mentioned this on the Fair Forum, but as a reminder, no one will be allowed to take pictures in the Hasbro building (except inside the cafeteria). Hasbro will make announcements to everyone (especially during the tours), anyone caught taking pictures will have camera/phone confiscated and will not be allowed back in the building. Hasbro will also need everyone to follow their guides as we walk around and not wander off – again, anyone found wandering will be kicked out and not let back in. They don't want to sound mean, but they have to enforce security since they're a publicly traded company and there are things that are just not ok to have the public find out about too soon.

New 2011 Comic Con Exclusive Pony Revealed!

After much speculation by collectors, this year's Comic Con Exclusive Pony has been officially revealed! She will be available at this year's San Diego Comic Con for $14.99 and on Hasbro Toyshop.

I don't know about you, but I love her punk meets goth style. She is definitely unique and will be a great addition to the Comic Con ponies! I can't wait for her to join my collection.

What is a "Brony"?

For those who may be blissfully unaware of this new crop of Pony fans, I came across this video by RocketBoom that does a nice job of explaining exactly what it is to be a Brony.

While it is a little odd that there are tons of new male pony fans clamoring over the awesomeness that is Friendship is Magic, as a lifelong My Little Pony fan I say, bring on the pony love!

New My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Billboard

According to My Little Pony on Facebook this new billboard will be unveiled in Los Angeles tomorrow to promote FIM on the Hub.

I think it is hysterical that all of the ponies are posed yet Pinkie Pie looks completely clueless with a smile plastered on her face. I have to say that Friendship is magic has definitely made me appreciate Pinkie Pie as a character.

Alter Ego Jewelry designer Erika Walton Creates Funky Pony Pieces!

Erika Walton who is the designer of Alter Ego pays homage to nostalgic characters including superheros, Looney Toons, and My Little Pony by incorporating them in her fun and funky jewelry designs. Her pieces may be loud and flashy, but deep down you have to admit that given the right occasion (The My Little Pony Fair and Convention) you know you'd love to flaunt one of her designs around your neck. It would definitely garner some attention from other fans!

I think Erika needs to show off her designs at The My Little Pony Fair. I want to see these crazy pieces in person.

Visit Alter Ego and see all of her pony designs.

The My Little Pony Fair has had a banner year for ticket sales. Adult and child general admission tickets are still available through our eventbrite ticketing system for the main day of the Fair on Saturday. Online ticket sales will end on Friday July 1st. Visit www.mylittleponycon.com for details.

Pinkie Pie's Pie Hole

The other day while I was in Target, I spotted this...

A Pinkie Pie bubble machine complete with My Little Pony bubble solution! I haven't found anything new in my area for awhile so I happily added her to my cart to fulfill my pony fix. Plus, I rationalized to myself that my 5 and a half month old would love the bubbles. When we got home, I rushed outside with my husband carrying the baby, to try out Pinkie.  I pulled the trigger on her tail which raises her head up and bubbles came spewing out of her mouth. I found this very amusing since it reminded me of those cartoons where the character swallows a bar of soap, and if a pony was going to swallow a bar of soap, it would be Pinkie Pie.

While I delighted in the bubbles coming out of Pinkie Pie's Pie Hole, London was not impressed.

Let this be a lesson: My Little Pony purchases can not be rationalized no matter how hard I try.

"My Little Obsession" Documentary Film trailer is online!

Premiering July 8th as part of the My Little Pony Fair Convention festivities, My Little Obsession is a feature length documentary centered around My Little Pony and the people who collect them. Check out the film trailer. I had the honor to be interviewed for Julie's film and am so excited to see the finished product!

The film's director, Julie (also known as MustBeJewel), wrote the following to describe her film:

"In 1980, the My Little Pony line of toy figures and merchandise was created by a New England woman named Bonnie Zacharie. Little did she know that with her simple idea, she would create a legacy that would last well into the twenty-first century.
The funny thing about My Little Pony collectors is that they cannot easily be picked out of a crowd. They are students, lawyers, nurses, taxidermists, Broadway actors, teachers, and florists. Most of them conduct their lives just like anyone else, with the same mundane day-to-day obligations that everyone has to face. Yet these same people have hundreds or even thousands of these small plastic ponies displayed or stored in their homes, with values that would blow your mind.
We will meet people who have enormous collections, some with whole rooms of their houses devoted to displaying their collections. Some were parents or children in the 80's, and some are children growing up with the newest generation of My Little Pony. And on this eccentric and upbeat journey, we will celebrate a nearly 3-year legacy, and find out just what it means to be a My Little Pony collector."

I'm on Vacation!

So the school year is officially over and instead of teaching second graders, I can now focus on the last few details of this year's My Little Pony Fair and Convention (more info can be found at www.mylittleponycon.com in case you've been living under a pony-free rock for the past few months).

I'll be posting a slew of updates in the coming days including contests, awesome mega deal codes for The My Little Pony Collector Inventory books, details about the premiere of the film, My Little Obsession, and oh so much more.

Signed My Little Pony Auctions to Benefit Lymphoma Association

Hi Pony Pals!

Lucy Sawdon is running some auctions currently on Ebay of celebrity signed My Little Ponies. All proceeds will go to the Lymphoma Association and since I'm all about a good cause and this is pony related, I'm promoting her efforts.

Celebrity signed ponies include:
Lorraine Kelly, the cast of the hit TV series Hustle,Mercedes McNab,Stephanie Romanov, jockey Peter Scudermore, and jockey Lester Piggott.

Lucy's auctions can be found HERE.

Here's a little information on the Lymphoma Association for curious minds:
Founded by patients in 1986, the Lymphoma Association is the only specialist UK charity that provides accurate medical information and support to lymphatic cancer patients, their families, friends and carers.

When patients learn they have lymphatic cancer, whether this is Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, they often know little about it. In these circumstances, it is natural to feel fear or anxiety. However, the Lymphoma Association believes that knowledge conquers fear, so continually works to provide accurate medical information and emotional support to anyone affected by lymphoma.

Lymphoma is the most common cancer in the 18-35 age group and is most prevalent among women however very few people are aware of its existence or the symptoms until they are directly affected by it. To learn more you can visit the Lymphoma Association's website directly at The Lymphoma Association .

Hasbro’s catering staff is offering a catered lunch for purchase on Saturday. Sales end June 8th so we can get the final lunch count to the catering staff. If you are interested in purchasing lunch, visit our Eventbrite lunch ticketing page: http://mlpfairlunch.eventbrite.com/

We have confirmed the motor coach pick up times with the transportation company and will be dividing those with tickets on the motor coach into two groups. Currently, we have only 4 vendor booths left for purchase. If you want to add a vendor booth, you should purchase it very soon. We cannot fit any additional booths in the convention space at Hasbro. Once the booths are reserved we will not be adding any more.

The movie screening of the documentary film about My Little Pony Collecting entitled My Little Pony Obsession will take place on Friday night at the Renaissance Hotel after the tours at Hasbro. In order to accommodate all Fair attendees, we will have two movie show times and attendees will be divided into two groups. The first showing will take place at 6:00 and the second session will be at 7:30.

Temporary crazy...

Sorry I've been a little light on the blog posts lately. I headed back to work on the 4th which is quite the adjustment. I traded one little person for 22 as I went back to teaching second grade. On the bright side, I only have seven weeks until summer break.

I've been keeping up with exclusive pony orders and Fair emails, although it takes some effort to keep everything up to date while I feel like I'm being pulled in many different directions. Glad this is only temporary!

Reviewing Billy The Unicorn

I was contacted earlier this week by San Francisco book publisher, Immedium, to review Billie The Unicorn by author Brianne Drouhard. The illustrations are wonderful (which is no shock since Brianne has worked as an animator on several cartoon network shows). The unicorns in the story have a slight resemblance to the My Little Pony characters in the new Friendship is Magic animated series. The central character,Billie, even wears a straw hat similar to Applejack. Brianne Drouhard spins a heartfelt tale of adventure, magic and whimsy that leaves you wanting more. Her beautiful illustrations transport you into a world you’ll want to visit again and again.

Billie The Unicorn will be available in hardback April 2011! For additional details about this charming book, visit http://www.immedium.com/products/billieunicorn.html

I also took a look at the author's website and she has a bunch of her drawings and concepts posted. I'm finding myself wondering what this talented author and illustrator will be working on next!

Yum! Pony Wedding Cake

I've had some extra time on my hands in the evenings since Baby London is finally on a sleeping schedule-Hooray! Tonight, while I was organizing one of my online photo accounts and I came across this photo of my wedding cake from the summer of 2004.

I'm thinking of getting a large print of it and hanging it in my office. I would hang it in the pony room,  but wall space is premium real estate in there and there just isn't any extra space. I still have multiple storage tubs and boxes of pony items in our unfinished storage area in the basement waiting for the day when we hire a contractor and make it into the ultimate Pony Room.

It's Good to Have Plans!

After much work on Mary's part and a week long session of phone tag, we now have a room block available in a hotel for the 2011 MLP Fair. I'm really excited to have this task finished and will be posting the details tonight or tomorrow after we have a chance to go over the contracts.

In the past, it hasn't been a big deal if someone didn't want to stay in the hotel the Fair had a room block in, but this year attendees might want to think twice since there are going to be some awesome perks and events available exclusively to hotel guests!

More information to follow very soon!

Happy Puppy Bowl.... I Mean Super Bowl!

I hope everyone is enjoying eating unhealthy foods and rooting on your team of choice if you're into that kind of thing. Personally, I prefer watching Puppy Bowl VII in the afternoon and then watching the commercials during the game.

If you need any of the newly released My Little Ponies, Toys R Us is running a Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on all ponies priced $6.99 and under from now until February 12th.

Do you want to be a winner?

You'd think that since I'm on maternity leave from work that I'd have oodles of downtime to add blog posts, answer emails, and catch up on reading. So far, that hasn't been the case. For such a tiny person, London takes up quite a bit of my time!

However, I wanted to post to bring attention to some great contests going on in the pony community. www.mlptp.net is hosting a Pony Street Sign Contest where you can submit photos of street signs that match pony names for a chance to win prizes! Additional info can be found here. Also, the UK PonyCon is hosting a pony identification contest to raise funds for the 2011 UK PonyCon. Participants must donate at least 1 pound and correctly identify close-up photos of My Little Ponies for a chance to win ponies. Details can be found here.

2011 My Little Pony Fair Date Change!!

Please notice that the date of the 2011 My Little Pony Fair has been changed to July 8th and 9th instead of the previously announced date of July 22nd-23rd. Hasbro didn't realize that both The Fair and Comic Con were scheduled on the same weekend and moved the Fair to the 8th and 9th of July so we can have more Hasbro production employees involved in the Fair. I hope that since this date change has been made so early (6 months before the event) it won't effect anyone's plans. We want to make this Fair the best yet and are really excited about Hasbro's increased involvement and willingness to host the 2011 Fair!!

A Very Happy New Year!

Although totally unrelated to My Little Pony in every way except that he is also little, I'd like to introduce London.

Baby London was born last Saturday January 1st 2011.
He is 6 pounds 12 ounces and 19 inches long. He is pretty awesome!
